Meet Miss California 2000

Rita Ng

Rita is crowned by MaryAnne Sapio, Miss California 1999.
Rita with her local director, G.H. Armour. Rita was Miss Los Altos prior to being named Miss California 2000.
The Miss America Organization's new Executive Vice President, George Bauer was on hand to greet the new Miss California.

Rita is a 2000 graduate of Stanford University where she received her degree in Human Biology. She has been accepted to medical school at the University of California, San Francisco, and plans to become a pediatrician.

At Stanford, Rita graduated with a 3.99 GPA (honors distinction) and was named to Phi Beta Kappa. She is the recipient of the Dinkelspiel Award as one of Stanford's top 2 outstanding graduates, and received the Firestone Medal for top honors thesis. In addition, she was selected as one of Glamour Magazine's Top 10 College Women of the Year, and was named to USA Today's "All-USA First Academic Team" as one the top 20 undergraduates in the nation.

Other academic honors include: Chapell-Lougee Scholar, Beagle II Entrepreneurial Scholar and Payson Treat Fellow. She has been published in the SSRA Research Journal, and has had a paper accepted for publication in Psychology & Aging. Her honors thesis was presented at the National Association of Chinese Studies Symposium and the National Gerontological Society Conference.

Rita received a perfect score on her MCAT writing sample, served as a writing tutor and Kimball Hall advisor at Stanford and authored the children's book, Pen Pals.

An accomplished classical pianist and violinist with 17 years of training, Rita founded the Young Composers Piano Program, a free piano program for over 200 underprivileged children in Tracy, her hometown. She was selected as a model in Procter & Gamble's Global Beauty Care "At Your Best" print ad campaign, featured in the summer 2000 throughout the US and internationally.

Her hobbies include waltz and swing dancing, tennis, basketball, running, rollerblading, aerobics and yoga.

At the Miss California Pageant, Rita performed a classical piano solo, Beethoven's Appassionata (Sonata Opus 57, No. 3). She was a preliminary talent award winner, and also received the Outstanding Interview award, the Leni Arnhym Classical Performer award and the Community Service award.

Her platform issue is Promoting the Health and Welfare of America's Children.
