Crystal Lee
Miss California 2013

In June 2013, Crystal Lee graduated with two degrees from Stanford University (BA Human Biology `13 and MA Communication `13) and was also crowned  Miss California 2013. Having earned preliminary awards in fitness, talent, and evening gown at Miss California, she went on to become 1st Runner-Up of the 2014 Miss America Pageant.  In the nationally-televised competition, Crystal performed a ballet en pointe talent routine and answered a question about U.S. Intervention in Syria. She also received a $5,000 STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) scholarship. This 22 year-old spends her year traveling across the world as an advocate for education, public service, and her personal platform of encouraging women in STEM. Aspiring to eventually work in technology in the San Francisco Bay Area, she has interned at a variety of companies including Dropbox and KRON4 News.

Crystal’s favorite part of the job of Miss California is using her passion for entrepreneurial startups to further the role of women in STEM. Whether it’s arranging partnerships with growing tech companies or visiting schools to inspire girls to consider engineering, Crystal hopes to leave a legacy centered around breaking barriers, innovation, and personal growth. In a world where positive role models are needed more than ever, Crystal is the 90th woman to serve in this position. Founded in 1924, the Miss California program offers young women an inclusive opportunity to earn scholarships, build lifelong friendships, and develop crucial life skills and values in a supportive environment.

Over the years, Crystal has earned over $60,000 in cash scholarships. She was formerly Miss San Francisco’s Outstanding Teen and Miss California’s Outstanding Teen in 2008, and held three local titles (Miss San Francisco in 2011, Miss South Counties in 2012, and Miss Silicon Valley 2013) before clinching the title  of Miss California over 61 other contenders. Thousands have had the opportunity to be inspired in their work in STEM. Crystal recently appeared in April as part of the USA Science and Engineering Festival Expo’s stellar lineup of science celebrity performers at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington D.C. Other recent appearances include a TEDxUCSD talk, a keynote at Brown University, and a 3-city media tour in China with the American Pistachio Growers.
