WHAT IS X-TRAV?
It’s shorthand for Extravaganza! The Southern California Sweeps Competition and X-TRAV are a series of up to four official Miss America local competitions held consecutively on a single day. This is designed to advance as many as 12 candidates to the Miss California Competition and as many as 12 candidates to the Miss California’s Outstanding Teen Competitions, and to support the Miss California Organization. Both state competitions will be held in Fresno, CA during the last week of June 2020.
The Southern California Sweeps Competition traditionally sends 4 candidates to Miss California. All Sweeps candidates have competed in at least one other local competition this season but did not win.
WHEN AND WHERE IS X-TRAV?
Candidate interviews for the Sweeps and X-TRAV will be conducted on March 21, 2020 starting around 8:00 or 9:00 AM to approximately 2:00 PM. Each candidate will have a 10-minute private press conference style interview with each of four panels of judges. Each panel will consist of 5 to 6 judges. The four panels will operate concurrently but separately, with candidates scheduled on a rotational basis.
Candidate rehearsals commence immediately after the first several candidates have interviewed with all panels. After rehearsal, the stage competitions for the SoCal Sweeps and X-TRAV 1 will begin.
The SoCal Sweeps and X-TRAV 1 will begin at approximately 3:00 PM.
X-TRAV 2 and 3 will begin at approximately 5:30 PM and will be open to remaining candidates who have not won. Up to four titles will be awarded at X-TRAV 2 and 3 each, for Miss and Teen.
The competitions will conclude at approximately 8:00 PM.
HOW MANY WILL WIN?
The number of titles awarded at any Miss America local preliminary competition is governed by the number of candidates, and by the 3-6-9-12 rule. This rule requires that there are at least 3 candidates for each title, and that a maximum of 4 titles (for 12 or more candidates) may be awarded at each event. Additionally, there can be a maximum of 40 Teen candidates at the state competition.
We anticipate that the Sweeps will have about 20 – 25 Miss entries. We cannot predict at this time how many Teen candidates will enter X-TRAV. (Teens are not eligible to enter the Sweeps.)
X-TRAV’s are not regular operations local competitions, where local titleholders are selected to represent their communities for a year of service. X-TRAV exists to provide as many additional women as possible the opportunity to compete for Miss California or Miss California’s Outstanding Teen, since all state candidates must have won a local title. A chance to compete at Miss California is a game changer for almost every woman who competes. It’s worth the effort and cost to sponsor this event. Moreover, it is a fundraiser for the Miss California Organization because of increased ticket sales, ad page sales and event sales at the state competition.
Of course, each winner receives the official Miss America or Miss America’s Outstanding Teen Official Local Crown.
WHAT WILL THE WINNERS’ TITLES BE?
We will find out on competition day! Local titles that existed over the last several years (such as Miss Golden State South, Miss Bay Area, Miss Beach Cities) but are no longer active will be used. We will make an effort to match each winner to a title that is representative of where she lives or attends school. (This is subject to revision.)
HOW DO I ENTER AN X-TRAV COMPETITION?
You are considered “entered” when you register* (see detailed instructions below) for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMNH) fundraising at missamericaforkids.org for Miss candidates, or maoteen4kids.org for Teens, and add the X-TRAV’s to your competition list. The X-TRAV registration option is already active. We do not accept entries for X-TRAV any other way.
All candidates are required to register at the appropriate website for each competition that they enter. Teens are not required to raise funds at the local level but must set a fundraising goal. Miss candidates are required to raise a minimum of $100 for each competition they enter, until they reach a total of $400 raised. This is called “the cap.” At that point they are automatically “qualified” to enter as many competitions as they choose without raising additional funds.
Miss Candidates are eligible for X-TRAV if they compete in the Sweeps and do not win. Additionally, candidates who were never eligible to enter a local competition during the current season (current season is July 1, 2019 through June 30, 2020.) may enter X-TRAV directly. Examples would be titleholders under contract to another local competition until there was no opportunity to compete, and candidates whose eligibility to compete in California was established too late for other competitions.
Teen candidates may enter X-TRAV directly, since there is no Sweeps competition for teens. There is an entry fee of $200 for Teens.
Once you have entered, we will email you further information!
We hope to see you at X-TRAV 2020!
